Department of Social Communication
The Department of Social Communication was opened at the faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences by the order of the Chancellor of BSU in May 1999 «to ensure training of students specializing in Information and Communication and also to activate scientific research in the field of communicational processes in the modern society». O. Tereschenko (the Head of the Department), professor Dr. O. Manaev, associate professor N. Yefimova, assistant professors N. Yelsoukova, I. Krasavtseva, V. Fours, lecturers I. Bourina, M. Mazanik, assistant M. Rednikina were first people working at the department. Intensive spadework within the Belarusian-French-British project TEMPUS (1993-1997), opening of the Department of Information and Communication at the faculty of Philosophy and Economics (1997) and also long traditions of scientific research in the field of communication preceded creation of the Department.
The Social Communications major was launched at BSU in 2012 and is one of the most sought-after programs among employers and students today. Students enrolled in the Social Communications major will receive the training necessary for the following activities:
- producing information about an organization or enterprise and its product for the purposes of positioning and promotion;
- information support for management decisions and assessing their consequences: collecting, processing, accumulating, updating, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting information, including through marketing, organizational, media, and other research;
- planning, developing, and implementing communications policies for enterprises and organizations: strategies, campaigns, promotions, and events to promote, position, and reposition their products and services; evaluating the results of communications campaigns and events;
- disseminating information using modern information and communication technologies in the interests of the employer (enterprise, organization);
- developing, implementing, and optimizing information resources and flows within enterprises and organizations;
- training and professional development for personnel of organizations and enterprises.

The department conducts scientific and methodological work, including the preparation and publication of teaching aids and teaching and methodological complexes for disciplines taught by the faculty.
Annually in the framework of the faculty conference «Human. Culture. Society» the Department organizes the work of sections on mass, organizational, Internet and marketing communications.
Students present the results of their research in the framework of the International Scientific and Practical Conference «Communication in social and humanitarian knowledge, economics, education» held by the Department.
Students of the Department annually participate in the National Competition of Scientific Works of Students. A number of student scientific works were awarded with awards and prestigious awards, diplomas of international competitions.
Teachers of the Department carry out the scientific management of the teaching and research work of the students of the department of social communications within the framework of the training practice, the management of course and diploma theses.
